Machakos People's Park
What Is Machakos People's Park?
Built on the edge of Machakos town, People's Park is a well-maintained public green space with illuminated walkways, ornamental arches, dancing fountains, a 300-metre zip-line, camel and horse riding, boat rides on a small lake, archery, a skateboard ramp and a dedicated children's playground. Entry is free.
Getting There from Tea Tot Hotel
The park is approximately 2 km from Tea Tot Hotel on Konza Road — a short matatu ride or a pleasant 20-minute walk through Machakos town. Tuk-tuks are available outside the hotel for around KES 100–150 each way.
What to Bring
No ticket required — just walk in. Bring some cash for the zip-line (approximately KES 200), camel rides and snacks from the park vendors. Sunscreen is useful in the afternoon. The park is fully paved and pushchair-friendly.
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings are quietest. Come back in the evening: the fountains and LED walkways are lit after 6:00 PM and create a very different atmosphere — popular with families after dinner. Avoid Sunday afternoons when it gets busy with local crowds (or embrace it — the energy is great).
Combine With a Stay
Machakos People's Park is ideal for families and groups who want an easy, free outing between conference sessions or hospital visits. Ask the Tea Tot front desk for the latest park hours and any upcoming events.
