Day trip to Ol Donyo Sabuk

Buffalo Mountain

Ol Donyo Sabuk — also called Kilimambogo — is a national park where elephants, Cape buffalo, baboons and more than 45 bird species roam freely. Three waterfalls cascade down its flanks, and the historic MacMillan burial site sits near the summit at 2,146 m.

Getting There

The park is approximately 85 km from Tea Tot Hotel — about a 90-minute drive. Head towards Thika on the Nairobi–Thika Superhighway, then turn off at Kilimambogo. Our front desk can help arrange a private vehicle or link you with a local driver. Guided day trips are available on request.

What to Expect

Park entry: KES 600 per adult, KES 200 per child (subject to Kenya Wildlife Service rates — confirm at the gate). Bring sturdy walking shoes, at least two litres of water per person, binoculars, sunscreen and a light raincoat. The trails are steep in sections; budget three to five hours for a return hike to the summit.

Best Time to Go

Leave before 7:00 AM for the best wildlife sightings and to reach the summit before the midday heat. Avoid heavy rain months (April–May, October–November) when paths become slippery. Clear mornings offer views as far as Mount Kenya.
